GEO, explained in plain English
The next front door to your business is an AI answer. GEO is how you show up in it.
Q1 · What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) in plain English?
SEO is making your business show up when someone searches Google. GEO is making it show up when someone asks an AI — ChatGPT, or the AI answer at the top of Google. Instead of ten blue links, the customer gets one written answer, and the businesses named in that answer get the call. GEO is the work of being one of the names: clear pages that answer real questions, in text a machine can read and quote.
Q2 · Does GEO replace SEO, or do I need both?
No — it sits on top of it. The AIs learned to pick sources from the same signals Google rewards: clear text, real answers, a business that looks legitimate and local. A site invisible to Google is invisible to ChatGPT too. The practical answer: do the SEO basics on every page, then write the question-and-answer content AIs love to quote. That second part is what most local competitors haven't started, which is exactly why it's worth doing now.
Q3 · How do I measure whether GEO is working?
Simplest test costs nothing: ask ChatGPT and Google what you'd want a customer to ask — "who does mobile detailing in Indio?" — and see if you're named. Do it monthly; screenshot it. Beyond that, watch two numbers you already have: calls and bookings from people who "found you online" without clicking an ad, and what your site's analytics call AI or chat referrals. It's early — nobody has perfect GEO numbers yet, and anyone selling you a precise dashboard is guessing.
